The Philippines was named in 1542 after King Philip II of Spain (who also became King Philip I of Portugal in 1580). According to the Treaty of Tordesillas that preposterously divided the newly discovered lands beyond Europe between Spain and Portugal, this archipelago of over 7,000 islands fell under Spanish claims. However, the first European expedition to reach the Philippines, while sent by the Spanish crown, was led by the Portuguese explorer Fernão de Magalhães, known to the English as Ferdinand Magellan. I wrote about Magellan's epic journey to the Philippines in an early blog post: https://www.portuguese.asia/post/the-portuguese-role-in-the-history-of-the-philippines.
In May this year, the renowned Filipino director Lav Diaz premiered his latest film, Magellan, at the Cannes Film Festival in France. A historical drama about the 16th-century Portuguese explorer, the film focuses on the final months of Magellan's life in the Philippines and his fatal confrontation. It stars Mexican actor Gael García Bernal in the title role, and was selected as the Philippines' entry for the 98th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film.
The film was released in Philippine cinemas in September. Here's the official trailer:
