Portugal established diplomatic relations with Singapore in 1981, when the Portuguese ambassador to Thailand was also accredited as non-resident ambassador to Singapore. To mark the 45th anniversary of this relationship with a country that is today Portugal's largest trading partner in Southeast Asia, the Portuguese embassy in Singapore has organized a photographic exhibition at the National Library Building.

The Portuguese ambassador, H.E. Carlos Pires, launched the exhibition, "Portugal & Singapore: 45 Years of Diplomatic Relations, Five Centuries of Shared History", on July 2 with a reception that included senior officials from Singapore, ambassadors and diplomatic staff from other countries, and members of the local Portuguese community.

The exhibition opens with the following words, with links to related articles on Portuguese.Asia:

The relationship between Portugal and Southeast Asia dates to the fifteenth century, when maritime exploration brought Portuguese navigators, traders, and ideas to Asia. These encounters left enduring marks, traces still visible today in language, traditions, and the communities that took root across the region.
This long-standing connection is also reflected in individual figures who helped shape Singapore's early history. Sir José d'Almeida, a Portuguese physician and prominent member of the Eurasian community, arrived in Singapore in 1825 and left a lasting mark on its social and civic life, his name still carried by one of the city's streets.
The formal establishment of diplomatic relations forty-five years ago gave renewed expression to this historical bond, anchoring it in a modern partnership between two outward-looking, globally connected nations. Since then, Portugal and Singapore have built a dynamic relationship spanning political dialogue, trade and investment, scientific collaboration, cultural exchange, and sport, including the quietly remarkable story of a Portuguese coach guiding Singapore's finest sprinter towards new heights.
Through a curated selection of images, this exhibition reflects both continuity and transformation: from early encounters to contemporary ties, from shared histories to future possibilities. It is a visual tribute to a relationship shaped by centuries of exchange, and to the enduring spirit of openness that continues to bring Portugal and Singapore closer together.

If you're in Singapore in July, do check out this exhibition before it goes away!
